Jason Connell:

Whoa, just curious. Welcome to Just curious media. This is let's talk movies. And I'm Jason Connell on the show today I'm joined by Sal Rodriguez.

Sal Rodriguez:

Thank you Jason. It's good to be here.

Jason Connell:

It's good to have you back my friend and this is kind of a call back. Very exciting callback adjacent, because today we're talking about Roadhouse. Not 1989 but 2023 Sneak Peek, because Sal, it's happening. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

yeah, we finally get to see something.

Jason Connell:

Finally we talked about this back when we did Roadhouse on Let's Talk movies, Episode 10. In fact, let me give you the date on that when that thing dropped. It dropped December 24 2021. How about now? Yeah, I'm flying festive time, and it's super exciting. And we talked about there was going to be Roadhouse with Ronda Rousey. Yes, Rhonda,

Sal Rodriguez:

a few years ago, and they were I think during her UFC reign, they were talking about Ronda Rousey being the star of a roadhouse reboot. They were talking about it, but we never saw anything, nor do I think they ever broke ground on production.

Jason Connell:

No, and then I read that she was fired. They moved on. There was a roadhouse too. There was a sequel, but it wasn't Swayze or Sam Elliott or Kelly. Right. I never saw up to me. It doesn't exist. I forgot about that. But I've been waiting for this. This is happening. There was actual tangible truth. You put this on my radar. Oh, and so what this is, is yes, it's a remake. And this remake has one Jake Gyllenhaal. He's not playing the same character as the in fact, there are no characters names, at least for him online. But he is the lead. And he's playing what's out what what's your interpretation thus far? And we'll get into what we saw and more things about the movie, but again, we don't know too much, but we know a little bit because it ties into something that you're close to, which I think is really cool.

Sal Rodriguez:

Oh yeah, very close to my heart. That is the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC as it's known. I believe that Jaylen halls character in the Roadhouse reboot is a former mixed martial artists. I'm assuming specifically a former UFC fighter seen as how there he was hanging out with Bruce Buffer. I mean, there's a clip of Conor McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal hanging out having words with Bruce Buffer. They were at a UFC event. So Michael Buffer, Michael Buffer the guy who goes

Jason Connell:

yeah, don't don't pay him. Don't do the whole thing.

Sal Rodriguez:

Okay, that's right. That's right. We will have to pay him royalties. It's an interesting story as a segue. Michael Buffer is the announcer for boxing. Bruce Buffer is the announcer for the UFC later. They found out later in life that they were indeed I believe at least half brothers,

Jason Connell:

and they're already announcing

Sal Rodriguez:

absolutely so

Jason Connell:

what what's Bruce's little thing? Does he have his own little take?

Sal Rodriguez:

Yes, he does. We are live. I don't know. Damn. And I should know what Bruce Buffer likes.

Jason Connell:

Let's get it on.

Sal Rodriguez:

No, no. Let's get it on was Big John McCarthy. Yeah, that was that was the ref Big John McCarthy. Are you ready? Are you ready? Let's get it on. Why don't I know Bruce buffers line? I don't remember. I remember two weeks from now in the shower.

Jason Connell:

You can just do Clint Eastwood's Clint Eastwood like when he's directing like when you're ready.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, remember also Bruce Buffer is announced versus McCarthy is a ref. So Bruce Buffer will do the announcing and then the ref will step in. But yeah, sorry everybody. I

Jason Connell:

forgot we're going down rabbit hole. But the point being Jake Gyllenhaal they've modernized this because in the original which I love very close to my heart and I know yours as well. You know we don't we know a little bit about Dalton we know that he's been a bouncer and he's you know he's about us and he can have cooler while he was a bouncer and he I'm sure he moved up the ranks to become a cooler. Like the levels of but I'm thinking like his backstory. We know he was this bad guy and he had a relationship and he's always known Wayne Garrett from you know, Sam Elliott, but we didn't know much about his career. So it was really cool if you're going to reimagine something and remake it this many years later. Well, you get a star a they've got a star. He went from you know, little movie. He's been a kid actor forever. I've always loved Jake Gyllenhaal. Let's just quickly run down some of the more recent movies Nightcrawler phenomenal. I could watch it. I

Sal Rodriguez:

love the day. I liked that I

Jason Connell:

did source code so much fun. Written by a friend of mine, Ben Ripley wrote the script. It's amazing movie Zodiak David Fincher Brokeback Mountain, of course, all the accolades. Most of it was for Leger, but you go back and watch it. Gyllenhaal kills it in that movie, the day after tomorrow. He's done some action as the son before he was, you know, a leading man. And Donnie Darko when he was still like in his teens or early 20s. And it goes on and on and on. He's phenomenal. Great actor director Doug Liman. I love Doug Liman from swingers go The Bourne Identity The Edge of Tomorrow and so many more very smart. So you get those two with this backstory because all the synopsis says is a remake of the 1989 film Roadhouse about a bouncer at a rowdy bar. That's all they're giving you right now. They're just giving their spoon feeding us. So this is our Sneak Peek about what we know. But we know what's happening. And we know it's coming out this year is what I've read 2023 They're in post production now or near the end of shooting action thriller. It's going to be great. As far as cast. There's one other actor I want to mention, but I'll let you take it now because someone else is in the movie from your space UFC space that you just learned about and that would

Sal Rodriguez:

be Yeah, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that a supporting player. In fact, I think downright the main antagonist is indeed the UFC zone, Conor McGregor, and hey, Happy St. Patty's Day to look I'm wearing green. I didn't even

Jason Connell:

last episode, so I'll be probably ready for tomorrow. What do you got? What

Sal Rodriguez:

are you guys speaking of? I've got a couple of Conor McGregor action figures here. These are both made by Jazwares. I think. Yeah, I think Jazwares made these Conor McGregor actuators. They're from different series. So they actually look different from one another. They look like they're different makers, but they're actually the same maker. Different series about a year apart, I believe Conor McGregor action figures. So he's a big name Conor McGregor still, too. So I learned Conor McGregor is the supporting star in this movie. And they actually filmed scenes of a fight at an actual UFC event.

Jason Connell:

I want to talk about that. But one more actor I want to plug and then we'll talk about that. But there's another kid in this but there's a few more people of course, but an actor who I've kept my eye on in fact, sound if I didn't have the career I had, I would have maybe been music supervisor or secondly been a talent agent because man I have so many times said we'll keep your eye on that person or this person. And you got the goods kid. And I had this kid I call him a kid. Listen to me, Billy Magnussen I've seen him in no time to die James Bond movie dollar seven, The Big Short, but he was on Get Shorty this TV series that was short lived but phenomenal. There is a good short movie. I love the movie. But this was a really a hip show. And I was like this guy. I can't take my eyes off him. He's amazing in this role, he had a lot of Arcturus character. I don't know he could do great things in this. And of course, John has I've already sung His praises and will continue to do so. So a you get that right. They've got the right team. They have a great concept. And I think they're going to deliver the goods. And so as we queue up what we saw them at this is what brought on our radar. Look behind ma'am. over my left shoulder. Yes, yes. Here's the original poster. There is our guy Patrick Swayze. Rest in peace, rest in peace, and there was a mock up. I liked this poster to have the original, more artistic take on Roadhouse.

Sal Rodriguez:

If you like a foreign press, or foreign release, it's online

Jason Connell:

now on IMDb, but I was like, that's really cool. I don't know if it was fan art, but I liked this style. So now I'm going to go into some photos from the event. There he is. Yeah, there he is talking to Doug Liman. There's a director. He's spraying him and so South please tell us what this event was because it was as recent as March 4 2023.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, so what happened is I'm usually online looking up a UFC to comm or a UFC that I missed. Try to find bootleg uploads wherever I can. And I happen to come across a fight and I swear I'm watching this fight and I'm looking at like, why does that fighter look like Jake Gyllenhaal? Right and I continue watching and realize Yeah, what happened is they actually filmed an actual scene from the movie at UFC 285 I don't know where that event took place Vegas, but they filmed it was Vegas. Yeah. Okay, so they filmed UFC 285, Gyllenhaal fighting I don't know who he was fighting he wasn't fighting Condamine

Jason Connell:

take a look. So here he is right before you know are in the midst of and then Harry is fighting fake fighting but really fighting and they do this lot and movie Sal like the movie Hoosiers. There was a real game going on at halftime they brought in the crew and they played because you've captured the audience in the city and everyone's excited and and by the way, can I just say it the way and the fake way in John halls direct

Sal Rodriguez:

that's what I'd love to see see as a UFC fan as a fight fan. I know about the weigh ins the face offs and all that and when I saw the clips I'm like he'll it looks real it doesn't look fake

Jason Connell:

Edward Norton and American History X like Guy Yeah, just you know workout incessantly. We're here he is here and look at his arm huge he's so in this shot if you're only listening chillin halls standing over his victim the fighter being pulled know what that

Sal Rodriguez:

is. That's the Muhammad Alicia. Alicia. Yeah, it

Jason Connell:

was not that high enough to see the guy on the ground. Yeah he didn't take a shot at him. Jelena. Now here he is fighting right? So he's dodging a punch a left handed punch from the fighter and then look at that pretty ripped. Joe has been working out hard with his trainers and getting ready for this. So you

Sal Rodriguez:

coaches now he has MMA coaches, not only trainers, MMA trainers training Well,

Jason Connell:

in the clip I saw there was like a real short clip. I didn't want to try to cue that up. But like Dana White's right there at the weigh in with Jillian Haas character now here we are looking at just pumping up the crowd pumping up the crowd, and then laughing Of course, that's what you do in the ring. And the lady that that's legit. Legit. Why don't you describe this Sal?

Sal Rodriguez:

Is it is it a flying knee? Is that what that looks like? Jake Gyllenhaal delivering a flying knee? You know what this means? Jason? We are one step closer to a Jake Gyllenhaal UFC action figure. I think we're gonna be seeing that and that'll be so cool.

Jason Connell:

First, what are the Paul's? Jake Paul and Jake Paul or Logan? Paul? Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

you know, Jason, one thing I wanted to mention was something that sticks in my mind over the years. They interviewed some director and they asked him about his choice to have an actor play a fighter. Yeah. Instead of a fighter playing a fighter. Yeah. And his quote I'll never forget was it's easier to teach an actor how to fight than to teach a fighter how to act. There

Jason Connell:

you go. Yeah. And

Sal Rodriguez:

I that line always stuck with

Jason Connell:

Yeah, so true. I have a couple more guys against the it's not a ring. This is like a cage,

Sal Rodriguez:

a cage. It's a UFC octagon, which is an eight sided cage. In fact, the octagon is copyrighted. So you if you and I were to start a fight promotion, we cannot have an eight sided fight cage

Jason Connell:

Oscar then I'm not gonna do it. Yeah. So and the next one. Hey, there's a guy hanging out. sitting ringside. That's Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. And there you have it, so let's cue it back to

Sal Rodriguez:

that might be Conor McGregor's wife next time maybe

Jason Connell:

maybe. Yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

great shots, great shots.

Jason Connell:

So that so you sent me a clip and I was like, Oh my gosh, we knew it was in the works. We talked about it on that episode. I highly recommend anyone to go back and revisit that episode of Roadhouse the original we broke it down as a scene by scene breakdown.

Sal Rodriguez:

Revisit Roadhouse, then revisit our episode. Yeah, yeah,

Jason Connell:

exactly are not just just listen to the episode. Just don't even watch them. We take you through the movie. But really amazing that this is happening. I was looking for a date. All I got was the year now I could get pushed. But I'm assuming this isn't like a summer movie. Think about it, you know, Roadhouse, right in the summertime. It's not the Oscar movie time you know, the award season so I am expecting that and I will absolutely see it. I hope I'm not disappointed. And then hey, maybe a deep dive on the new Roadhouse. And I'm glad that didn't change the name and like it's long enough the characters have moved on. It's okay to use the name in this way. I'm okay with a remake done gracefully. Respectfully, I mean, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the one from the 70s It's one of my favorite movies, but it's a remake the fly, right? Sure. Also in the 80s remake, but if it's done different, and it's been long enough, it's okay. But Batman Spider Man's they're rebooting them while they're still in the theaters. I have a problem with that. So that's where I draw the line. How about you?

Sal Rodriguez:

I tell you I'm very excited about this movie. I really am not only because you and I did our deep dive. I myself revisited and rewatch Roadhouse again to do the deep dive. Yeah, I'm a UFC fan, obviously a Conor McGregor fan even though I have issues with his personality. He's obviously a big name. And to see Jake Gyllenhaal walk into that cage to see him at the weigh ins to see him. That moment right before they go in the cage when they put the Vaseline on the Hell yeah, it looks so authentic. It looks so real. I'm telling you, it was great. So I'm very excited for this.

Jason Connell:

I am to cannot wait. And before we sign off, I just want to tell our fans and our listeners and our viewers, that there's something really cool now on our website, just curious media.com Because I had to do this it was a matter of time and I finally put the time in. But people ask you for a quote or if I'm trying to even go back and think Oh, hang on a second. What did we say about this? It's really hard on shows like, let's talk Cobra Kai because every show is related to Cobra Kai. Let's talk movies is a little bit more forgiving that way. It's like when they talk about Roadhouse. Like at least pinpoint the episode. But even then it's that's a long episode. It's like an hour and a half. You can't really find and pull clips out. So I have built transcripts for every single episode of every single show. But they're very cool. They're interactive transcripts done by otter AI. So if you go to just curious media.com and go down to each individual show there's a link what's his transcripts, click it. And then each show has its own set of every episode in order very clean, chronologically listed. You can click on on it. And Sally, you're on lots of those episodes. Let's talk movies. Hey, let Ansel say about an American and American story. You're on American Gigolo, and an American Werewolf in London,

Sal Rodriguez:

and an American Gigolo in London, American Gigolo in

Jason Connell:

London. He did very well, I'll say that he was very well. But anyway, so it's like, Oh, yeah. What did you say? Well, you can easily do a search find for something you said like that. I referenced this or, and the cool thing about this transcript is it also plays along while you look at it in our voices, it's more of a, you know, a lower quality mp3, but it's just for reference. So you can say, Oh, I said this, or you click the button, and you can hear it. And you see the words populate. And as you pointed out, when we talked about this earlier, there are some imperfections, it's AI, it's about 80 85% accurate, but you're like, what, the fractions are funny.

Sal Rodriguez:

So when you watch closed captioning, it's not. It's not 100%, right? It's not but no, when I read our transcripts, the stakes were hilarious. I was cracking up reading our show, because the mistakes just, I think, make it even funnier.

Jason Connell:

Yeah, so there's that and so very cool. Check it out. If you ever want to pull a clip or do something or like what did they say on this? It's a lot easier to find it with text and it is fun to read us. Very cool. That's one of the new offerings from just curious media, but that's all I got. So I'm super excited. I am more than most I know you are as well. So without further ado, please enjoy Roadhouse.
